My background, academically, is experimental film. I try my best to negotiate an honest truce with this fact, a certain distancing - in terms of my paintings, drawings and sculptural work. For this installation ( my first ), “A Dumb Swan.”, I gave myself over to it.
This work is a jump cut, a crossing of the axis, from a state that allows for purely psychological imagery to the state that we readily accept as concrete reality.
Then back again, as quick as can be.
A flash from deep inside the head, momentarily in our line of sight. Stumble, recover, laugh nervously.
And we all share a lot of common baggage, don’t we?
A set, in the filmic sense. A set piece, taken as art.
