Janet Jones is a painter who is interested in cultural theory and art criticism. Her paintings, which investigate the spaces of the postmodern city in relation to feminist geography, the techno-sublime and Situationism, have been exhibited across Canada, in New York, England, Germany and France & China. She received her MFA from York University, Toronto, and her Ph.D. from New York University in the area of art theory and criticism. Her thesis, Clement Greenberg and the Artist/Critic Relationship, focused on the political structure of the NY art world and the role played in it by the critic, Clement Greenberg. In 2000 she participated in the Big City Residency and in 1998, the Women and Paint Residency both at the Banff Centre for the Arts. She has been a visiting artist and given papers on painting internationally, in France, England, Russia, China and Cuba. Recent exhibitions/projects include: Artist Project, Public– Cities / Scenes Issue 22, exhibitions at Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Toronto, Kunsthalle Erfurt, Erfurt Germany, Faux-Mouvement, Metz, France, Owens Art Gallery, N.B., and Sylviane Poirier Art Contemporain, Montreal, Quebec. In 2003 she was a visiting artist at the Bauhaus, Weimar, Germany, Willem de Kooning Art Academy& Hogeschool both in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Janet Jones is an Associate Professor in the Department of Visual Arts, York University, Toronto. As well, she has been the Director of the MFA Graduate Program in Visual Arts, (1997-2000) and Coordinator of the Fine Arts Cultural Studies Program (1990-93).
