Lines Years ago I began a series of 11” x 11” black and white drawings with the purpose of simplifying the subject matter to the point that the viewer could see the complexities of the drawing - the mark making - without distraction. The drawings were rendered first in coloured oil pastels then over-layered repeatedly with black and/or white oil sticks. (An oil stick is a drawing tool about the size of a Cuban cigar. It’s tricky to do anything but make marks with anything so unwieldy.) I made hundreds of these drawings and, over time, became most interested in those works in which any semblance of a subject from life - a drawing of something - had pretty well vanished and all that was left was marks in the form of either circles or lines. Some of these drawings - the ones with circles in them - formed the basis for my last body of work. I glued down (and counted) 52,416 circular dome shapes to produce nine large diptyches with raised surfaces. (These raised surfaces were a construct that allowed for experimentation with colour.) I used another few thousand domes to produce related smaller works. Among the smaller works was one with a black ground and white and gray domes which just happened to measure 11” x 11”. Literally by accident it was hung at home with some of the black and white drawings and instantly there was a dialogue from two dimensions to three and back. Then I had a slump. I would like to thank my niece Adrienne Little for giving up her days off to assist me in sewing the tarpaulins. I could not have finished them without her help. |
